My Favorite Local Faire

Hello Friends~ ~ ~
Quaint and beautiful little house. Actually it is an 1800's tavern. It is a part of the Landis Valley Museum. If you ever get to Lancaster County, PA. be sure to visit the museum. What it is is a small village built in the 1800's by John Landis and his family. These two pictures are of the tavern.

This building is just behind the tavern. Beautiful stonework. The Pennsylvania Germans are an industrious bunch, of which I am a descendant.

Every Spring they host an Herb Faire during Mothers Day Weekend. It is my favorite faire to visit. For many years it was the only place locally to purchase heirloom vegetable plants. They really do taste better than the newer varieties. Try them if you haven't.

This Celsiana rose is one of the oldest varieties known. I was told it's first recorded appearance was in the 1500's. Three years ago I purchased this rose and it is now four feet tall with some canes growing to 8 feet and into it's neighbor a Crepe Myrtle. The fragrance is amazing.

The vendor selling these old roses is dependably at the faire every year as so many others are.

This is so much fun. It is the kitchen in the tavern. All day they demonstrate cooking.

How would you like to cook in this kitchen?

Making Bread.

How about this state of the art 1800 toaster?

I didn't notice the electric cord till I got home and looked at the pictures.

The fire for the oven is out back.

Honey, would you run outside and put another log in the fire

so I can bake the bread.

The homes in this village are beautiful.

Notice the man making and selling brooms by the fence.

Most of the homes are opened for viewing.

The building above is the General Store. It is stocked with antiques of the era.
Each home has a knowledgeable host inside to tell you the story of the home.

These next few shots are of the home of John and Elizabeth Landis founders of the village. The brick beauty above is the Landis home.

Lovely fireplace in the parlor.

The kitchen, love the colors.

One side of the home is a combo of brick and stone.

Looking down the street toward the faire.

Beautiful old shutters.

We had so much fun and I did purchase the Graham Thomas rose that I was searching for. What joy!

Hope you enjoyed the tour.

I am linking to these fun parties this week:

Foodie Friday

See you again soon.

hi Arisha, I certainly did enjoy the tour. The tavern is very quaint. Thanks for including a little history with your photos, very interesting. I'm sure the MD Faire was so much fun. I love doing these type events on weekends. I have several vintage roses growing in my gardens. They are my favorites. Wow, didn't our ancestors have a hard time cooking their meals, I don't know how long I'd last in that kitchen in the heat of summer.
I sure enjoyed the tour, and hope to travel to that area in the future.

Oh, I just love places like this. When I was a kid in Astoria-Queens, my father would take us, my 2 brothers, mom and me to Mistic City up states, NY and evryone would dress in 1800's cloths and all the homes and restaurants and stores where from that era...so I love this. Thank you for hosting. I'm also at: FTS.

Thank you for taking us with you to the " Herb Faire"! I enjoyed the tour & am very interested in the roses. I'm glad you found the one you wanted. I may check into finding the Celsiana rose, as I would like a climber to go up the Gazebo supports. Wouldn't it be nice to have that fragrance inside, while dining?

Lancaster reminds me of our Hudson, OH...very historic, Western Reserve-Williamsburg styles. Love it!

Looks like a fun day. We have a place here on LI, Bethpage Restoration Village. I taught school for 33 years, so I have been there a lot for field trips. Very similar. In the Fall they have a Fair with entries of vegetables and flowers grown here. I loved seeing all that.

Oh what a wonderful faire to attend! I would've loved that! So rich in history. I bet you could sense the steps of those that had gone before you. Gives me shivers! (And in this case that's a good thing! *winks*) Vanna

What a wonderful post! This is an event that I would have thoroughly enjoyed, not to mention the opportunity to buy heirloom seeds! My husband has family in NJ, so we get to PA a good bit. I'm going to keep this Museum in mind. Thanks.

Love attending these fairs- I enjoy seeing how people lived during those eras. I would have needed a housekeeping staff if I lived during that time- I enjoy creature comforts too much. *grin*

Hi Ahrisha!
So excited to come by and see your blog and that you are also from PA! I grew up on the other side of the state, but my Godparents lived in Harrisburg and so I spent much time in Lancaster!
My mother is a diehard early American furniture collector and raised her three girls to love the architecture, the history, and the period pieces from our country. Lancaster is like living in a museum!

(Dated a Lancaster guy all through college too!)

Thanks for finding me today.
Will love looking around here I can tell!

Hi Ahrisha! Following back from Foodie Friday! Thanks so much for stopping by and for the lovely comment.

What a great tour! I love the colors and the architecture of all of those buildings! Those colors in the Landis' kitchen are all through my house.

(I looked a little closer at the pic above the one with the cord and there's a torchiere lamp in the back corner of the kitchen ~ I doubt they had lamps like that back then either! LOL)

Have a great weekend! Stop by and say hello any time!
