I went antiquing with my friend Joy on Thursday and this is one of the treasures I came home with.
The ends are just hammered metal. Nothing fancy.
It is very clean on the inside. I wonder if it had a specific purpose or if it was just for decoration and storage.
It has a little chain on one corner so the lid stays opened.
The back.
The front has an English street scene. There is a pub on the left with a sign handing out front.
Sweet!
In my mind I am seeing it painted Annie Sloan Old White then rubbed with a little dark wax to bring out the pictures. Then maybe a little rub of gold. Any other suggestions? I would love to hear your ideas. What would you do with it?

Very sweet! I think it may be a coal bin?
I cannot wait to see what you do with it!

I have that exact same box. You were so lucky to find it. Mine was in my grandmother's house for years and then I remember it in my parents house too. They kept it on the fireplace hearth and my dad would keep the newspapers in it until it was time to recycle them and I used to sit on it when I watched TV. I keep mine in my work room now and have it filled with boxes of supplies. I wouldn't hesitate to paint it though...the design would really pop.
Well, after you make sure it's not worth a million dollars as an antique, I think it would look gorgeous painted. What a great find!
Have a great weekend!

I have not seen another one of these wooden and metal clad boxes. I have one that is indeed a sister to yours. My husband purchased it for me 30 years ago. Mine looks the same as yours but the metal clad is brass all around with a Dutch scene on the lid and front of the box. The back and sides are less ornate but beautiful nonetheless. I have always stored some of my recipe book collection inside the box. I hope you will enjoy yours as much as I have enjoyed mine.I am now a follower of your blog and look forward to return visits. I invite you to join me as well on my blog at http://atastefultouch.blogspot.com

White would be nice - but duck egg blue would be gorgeous ( I'm very pushy like that lol ) duck egg blue almost looks like a " patina " so would be perfect for metal!
Your newest follower - because I have to see what you do with this LOL
Hugs to you ,

I sold one of these boxes (with a different scene) years ago. I thought it was part of a fireplace set. I am seeing a blue finish, though the white would be nice.
What a great find!! Beautiful!
Thanks so much for stopping by!

that's a pretty box, think I'd put treasure inside.
What a great find! So many wonderful uses! I love your idea for painting it. It will look lovely. Gray would be a nice color, too. Can't wait to see what you do with it! xx
That is a coal box. My uncle had one in Scotland :-)
